History of Building
The Baton Rouge Electric Company (BRECO) power plant at 1503 Government Street is a former power plant building constructed in 1915. The BRECO plant was the exclusive provider of electric power to the city of Baton Rouge between 1915 and 1930, as the city grew from a small town into an industrial-fueled metropolis. After 1930, the plant briefly provided reserve power in support of Louisiana Station, a new super-power plant located north of the city, and the Government Street site began to function as the company’s servicing headquarters. In 1938, BRECO merged with Gulf States Utilities (GSU) of Beaumont, Texas, which continued to operate the site as its Baton Rouge service center until 1994, when Entergy took over and occupied the site until 2011. The BRECO property underwent Some modifications as it was adapted to evolving technologies and the needs of the expanding community. Nevertheless, the property remains clearly identifiable as an early 20th-century historic gem.
